The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho – The Author

Many of you might have expected The Alchemist to be on this list. Well, it’s got to be here! A simple narration with hidden meanings is how we would like to describe this gem. Have you heard the famous saying, “when you want something, all the universe conspires to help you to achieve it?” This is one of my favorite lines from this masterpiece. The Alchemist is a story that will inspire you to listen to your heart and follow your dreams, something we all need to do! To top that up, the unique vision and spirituality of Paulo Coelho will be a therapeutic experience. It is no wonder why this book is considered to be one of the best books for beginners.

What are some of the Best Books to Read for Beginners?

For a beginner, the first book he reads will determine whether he will be a reader for the rest of his life or whether books will be a stress agent to him or a dull thing, in layman’s words. Initially, what books you read should be determined after a little study. And this study won’t take more than 5–10 minutes. Many people will recommend various books, the ones they love. This doesn’t necessarily mean you will indeed like reading it. All that matters is whether you love the type of book you read.

Let’s say you like love stories, and then you should begin with that particular book in which the language is simple and crisp, and the content is around 200 pages and not more than that. Let’s say you are a bit geeky and like to learn something from anything you do. Then fiction novels are not something you should focus on. Nonfiction should be your target.

So here I have tried to categorize books based on your liking, which you should start reading.

The Key to Reading More: Best books to Read for Beginners

One of the most critical steps in starting to read again is to find the right books. Finding good books to read for adults doesn’t mean following a list of books that some authority says “everyone must read” or forcing yourself to slog through only the “most important books to read.”

Starting with an open, beginner mindset will help you find the books that will get you into reading–because you read for yourself and no one else. To get you started, I’ve put together a list of compulsively readable books to help you fall in love with reading and start making reading a habit in your life.

The Best Books to Read for Beginners to Start a Reading Habit

Below you’ll find easy-to-read books from the following genres or types of books: contemporary fiction, literary fiction, historical fiction, light or humorous fiction, mysteries and thrillers, dystopias, alternate realities, classics, and nonfiction and memoirs.

These are some of my favorite recommendations for books for beginner adult readers who want to enjoy reading again. No matter what interests you, there should be at least one book to get you started and help you fall in love with reading.

Contemporary Fiction Books

There are so many great books to read, and it can be tough to know where to start if you’re trying to get into reading again. These contemporary fiction books are some of my favorites, and I think they might be the perfect choices to get you started.

Reading is that one activity that helps you escape reality and immerse yourself in another universe. Books take you to different worlds you’ve never visited before, whether it is the fantasy world of Harry Potter or the world of heartbreak like in The Fault In Our Stars. The books we read help us understand the world better and form ideas. And, well, some of them also give us quotes that affect us so much that we get them tattooed.

But not all of us develop our reading habits right from childhood; as adults, we don’t know where to start. It can be a confusing deal because of the number of books available, but you also need to learn where to start so that you can quickly begin a love affair with books and nurture it as time passes.

Here’s a Guide for all Those just Beginning:

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Nick Carraway narrates the story, but it is primarily about a mysterious rich man Jay Gatsby. Jay is a millionaire known for his lavish parties, but the strangest part is that he never attends them. At least, that is what Nick discovers while meeting his cousin’s sister Daisy and her husband, Tom.

As the story unfolds, we discover that Gatsby knew Daisy from before. However, when he initially met her, he wasn’t doing so well financially, and she was a typical rich girl. But he still fell in love with her, and gaining wealth was a part of his plan to become one with Daisy. The extravagant parties are an attempt to become a part of her world. Gatsby is more obsessed with Daisy than in love with her and is trying his best to make her fall in love. But the question is, does he succeed? Does he finally get a reciprocation for his love?

The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger

This one was originally published for adults, but over the years, The Catcher in the Rye has become popular with all teenage readers going through a phase of rebellion. The protagonist Holden Caulfield has been expelled from his school due to poor grades. He is at a confusing place in life and cannot even imagine telling his parents about the ordeal. Quite typical.

The book is the journey of Holden, who finds that he is shedding away his childhood to enter the adult world. Like any teenager, he finds it challenging and even plans on running away to become a hermit. However, you need to read the book to see if he takes the step. Moreover, it will make you live your teenage angst all over again.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

The Alchemist is a simple read with hidden meanings. Nevertheless, it finds itself on this list because even with its simple narration, it is a novel you’ll be able to understand once you’re of a certain age.

The plot follows the story of Santiago, a shepherd boy who believes that a particular recurring dream he has been having is a prophecy of some kind. So he visits a fortune-teller to ask her about it. She tells him that she sees a treasure in the pyramids in Egypt that Santiago should uncover. On his journey, he meets an old king who tells him of personal legends. “Your legend is what you have always wanted to accomplish. When they are young, everyone knows their legend,” and “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” To see if this is true, give it a read.

The Palace of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Diacerein

Everyone should pick this book up in their affair with reading. The plot concerns itself with the great Indian epic Mahabharata but is told by none other than Draupadi. For the longest time, our ancient literature has missed out on a feminine voice, but this retelling of the tale through the perspective of Draupadi will make you look at the story differently.

Born from fire, Draupadi marries the five Pandava brothers while harboring a secret love. She is often blamed for starting a war that killed many, but this is her story, and you may see why she isn’t the one to blame. A fresh take on an old account is a great way to ignite your interest in reading.

Sita: An Illustrated Retelling of the Ramayana by Devout Patnaik

This book is outstanding for its ability to make the readers warm up to an important twist in Ramayana, a story all of us know by heart. Told through the eyes of Sita, this book will take you through the journey of Ramayana, but it will be Sita telling her version of events. From a loyal wife who follows her husband to the forest to a mother raising her sons alone, this story will bring forth the character of Sita for you and make you respect her even more.
